Cable Car System for Bukit Larut
IPOH (Jan 15, 2009) : The country’s oldest hill resort, Bukit Larut aka Maxwell Hill in Taiping, will be developed into
a eco-tourist destination with the installation of a RM60 million cable car system that is eco-friendly and will not affect the
rich biodiversity site of the historical hill.
This eco-friendly project has received the blessings of the World Wildlife Fund
Malaysia and the State Environmental Department and is to be undertaken and funded by the company that successfully
implemented such a cable car system on Pulau Langawi.
Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming said, “Our priority is to safeguard the biodiversity of the
historical hill resort. We are carrying out this cable car system after studying the eco effects of the Pulau
Langawi hill project.
“With a regional tourism strategy, Bukit Larut can provide a unique recreation
attraction while retaining its natural assets. The hill’s rich bio-diversity, important water catchment values and
hydrological functions will not be disturbed."
Nga was speaking to reporters after receiving a delegation of nine members from the
Poi Lam Primary School Board of Directors and Parents-Teachers Association at the Mentri Besar’s press room
Nga also said the state government will look into the possibility of getting some
revenue from the Bukit Larut project although the hill project is wholly funded
by the developer.
