NIBONG TEBAL: The historical iron bridge built by the British over Kerian
River in the 1800s has been demolished to facilitate the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrified Double-Track
According to an official from KTM Bhd, trains are currently using a temporary
single-track line pending the completion of the 329km project.
The official said the iron bridge in Nibong Tebal, South Seberang Prai, was
dismantled about a year ago for the project and the materials were recycled.
State Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng
could not be reached for comment.
Yesterday, Universiti Sains Malaysia’s School of Social Sciences senior
lecturer Dr Saidatulakmal Mohd expressed disappointment over the bridge’s disappearance as it had heritage
value and unique architectural designs in the form of semi-circle arches.
She said that the bridge connected Perak and Penang.
